The
University of Malaya
has had a
long history of research in Agriculture beginning with the
establishment of the Faculty of agriculture in 1957. Currently the
core of Agriculture Biotechnology research lies within the Institute
of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science with the involvement of
more than 50 academic staff members seven core and seven allied
centers and groups.
The CEBAR’s laboratories have achieved recognition in the field by
concentrating and excelling in selected niche areas in
Agrobiotechnology. Among the areas that have National and
International reputations include in the Biotechnology of cultivable
Seaweed, Mushroom Biotechnology, Plant molecular improvement in
particular for the production of value added products in plants
through genetic engineering (Molecular Farming), In vitro culture of
economically important plants, Banana biotechnology, Management of
Agriculture waste and Goat biotechnology. In addition the unrivaled
experience in biodiversity research and its associated collections
underscores the University as a valuable Resource Centre for
Sustainable Agriculture.
